This relaxed and informal course introduces participants to looking at modern and contemporary visual art by exploring key artworks, artists, movements and concepts of the 20th Century. The course delves into seminal developments of the last century from the early 1900s to today such as Cubism, Surrealism, Conceptual and Performance Art among others. Delivered through a mixture of illustrated talks and gallery workshops, participants hear about, look at and discuss works of art with others in relaxed and informal surrounds.

To celebrate the Craft’s Council Year of Craft 2011, the Butler Gallery hosts an ‘in conversation’ event with exhibiting artist Alan Counihan and ceramicist Cormac Boydell. Counihan and Boydell, who are well known to each other, discuss the boundaries, overlaps and intertwining of the worlds of fine art and craft with reference to their respective practices and bodies of work in the context of the ‘Elemental’ exhibition at the Butler Gallery.

The National Gallery’s Leaving Cert Study Day will cover three topics in the morning session from the Leaving Cert curriculum - The Renaissance, Impressionism to Abstraction and Modern Irish Art 1890 – 1960. In the afternoon, the Butler Gallery will hold a workshop in the Gallery’s Mairead O’hEocha exhibition. The day is intended as a revision tool for students, backed up by visual examples from national and local collections.
