Israeli troops shoot Nobel Peace Prize winner

Noble Peace Prize laureate Mairead Corrigan was treated for injury in leg sustained by rubber bullet

Ali Waked, 20TH APRIL 2007

Nobel Peace Prize Mairead Corrigan has been injured during confrontations between security forces and left-wing activists protesting the security fence route near Bilin, activists said.

Corrigan, who won the prize in 1976 for her work in encouraging a peaceful solution to the Northern Ireland dispute, was hit in the leg by a rubber bullet and was transferred to a hospital for treatment. She was also said to have inhaled large quantities of teargas.

"I salute the residents of Bilin for their peaceful struggle in a region that is so violent and I call on the Israeli public, whom I know is for justice and peace, to support the residents' struggle," Corrigan told Ynet. Tito Kayak was also there

"I want to say that this separation wall, contrary to what the Israeli say, will not prevent attacks and violence. What will prevent attacks and violence is a peace agreement between the two peoples, and I am sure the Israeli people, like the Palestinian people, wants peace," Corrigan added.

26th April Press Release:Nobel Peace Prize recipient Maguire said today: "I was invited with my
friend to attend a nonviolent conference in Bilin, a village outside Ramallah [in the West Bank], and to give a talk there, which I did. At the end of the conference, we were invited to participate in a
nonviolent demonstration with some of the Palestinian members of parliament and Israeli peace activists and local villagers and international visitors.

"We walked along to try to walk up toward the separation wall, and it was a totally nonviolent protest. And we were viciously attacked by the Israeli military. They threw gas canisters into the peace walkers, and they also fired rubber-covered steel bullets. "As I tried to move back and help a French lady, I was shot in the leg with a rubber-covered steel bullet, and the young Israeli soldier who shot me was only 20 meters from me. I was stunned by it, and then later on, after having some treatment by the ambulance medics, I went back down to the front line with the peace activists, and we were again showered with gas. I was overcome and had a severe nosebleed and had to be taken by stretcher to the ambulance and treated.

"And I witnessed there ... an old Palestinian man with blood on his face. These were over 25 unarmed peace people who had been viciously attacked by the Israeli military. And it was a completely peaceful protest. It was absolutely unbelievable. I never in all my years of activism witnessed anything so vicious as from the Israeli military."

The shooting of Maguire took place on Friday, April 20; she is now back in Ireland and available for interviews.

I heard the highly-praised, General David Petraeus, give a briefing at the Pentagon today: Two things got my attention:
1) he told the press that Iraq now has private banking. He underlined the significance of that. So the war was about that? It was for private banking? We had private banking at the height of the civil war in Lebanon, and you don't see us bragging.
2) he said that the press should know that Iraqis should be able to live with car bombs and violence. He reminded the press that people in Northern Ireland were able to live with violence and bombings for years.
So the American invasion of Iraq was a social science project to see whether the Iraqi people are capable like the people of Northern Ireland to live with bombings??AngryArab.blogspot.com

Rathmines Festival,Dublin.

An outstanding performance of Sam Beckett's "Molloy."

Conor Lovett's performance, his clumsy gear, his sensitive hands and face full of tacit gestures and minute vocal inflections to a full house in St Mary's College will not be forgotten. The usual comedy of crude aspect, fahrts and portrait descriptions was completely overwhelmed by the comic desperation that can be felt in general when observing a ten year old child blunder through his errors, falls and confessions. The child cannot be blamed, as can the more mature, and the sight of innocence under seige is just too much for us to control, bursts of laughter assail the audience.

Well ofcourse Molloy/Lovett is not a child but his conversation with us was held with such confidence in our interest, and yet with such nervous apprehension that his histrionic art conveyed, even through glances from his eyes, that we shared a future with him - wherein he too would claim his memory of our response. A brilliant evocation of a man isolated by experience, solitary by choice, but an innocent certain that confession is a conversation that welds us all together in a manner quite differently from the religious rite of the Catholic.

The College had arranged in another Hall a small exhibition of biographic texts and photographs about Sam Beckett.

Lies, Damned Lies and......
A debate with three speakers Michael Clifford of Sunday Tribune fame, Valerie Cox author of "Ireland's Missing People", and Padraig Breathnach broadcaster and celebrity.

Michael Clifford "...and Statistics............" spoke about the false claim that statistics confirm that Ireland is sudddenly awash with crime. Infact, he says, statistics have been constant for the last ten years and Ireland has the lowest crime ratings in Europe. Gun crime, drug related, has no impact on people's general lives. The anti-social behaviour that the media records is blown out of all proportion to reality. Also we have the politicians fluctuating in their reactions to the violence of crime and its affect on the victims. Affluence brought insecurity and security is more easily broken up among those with less financial stability by their own peers.

One may reflect, obviously, how the affluent are recorded in the media for their corrupt business practices among themselves.

Valerie Cox revealed how difficult it is for journalists to get information from County Councils. She drew attention to their preference for expensive foreign travel junkets instead of the financial input that local problems at their Parish Pumps demand. These Councils are full of politicisized members who have to avoid penalising their Party profiles - she recorded that meetings held with journalists were often quite irrelevant or ill attended - two politicians ill advised to attend, as questions overheated the atmosphere at one Council meeting, disappeared and hid in the Toilets. She claims that it is very evident that Council members do not read the papers given out prior to Meetings that would enable them grasp problems, debate and recommend solutions. She is horrified at the scandal about dumping in Wicklow and claimed that aircraft and trucks who dump their fecal and hospital waste have evidently come to some agreements with Councils as to where that shall be . She then drew attention to the sewage problems throughout the country, effluence in rivers etc.

Padraig Breathnach jumped up from his seat and roared that the public life of this country is entirely one of lies - We Are Liars! He settled down to a steady pace up and down one side of the hall and fumed about lies he has told; lies he knows of that are so outrageous that have convulsed the political life of this country; lies that will in future be maintained and lies that will be invented in the future. Trapped into a Grant-aid development in his own home he gained a Grant by telling a lie that described for the first time ever that water flowed up the stairs rather than down. He roared about the travesties in Salmon and Lake and River fishing that is now reserved for Tourists whom he descried in their Edwardian gear on fishing trips that were, hilariously, guided by those cunning little men in tweed caps whose profits were amplified not only by the time taken to find a fish but by the substantial grants rendered those sutiably employed "in the cap", doffing salutes to the English and the estate owners.

Questions and answers buzzed back and forth and although we all knew that this debate merely illustrated what, as Padraig said, is spoken as "Common Sense" at home, everybody was well pleased to have these matters aired, with laughter, indictments and gossip.

Meeting an old friend for the first time for some years myself and my daughter retired to Slattery's with him to hear about Vincent Woods, "the excellent poet" and retrieve time that we artists are loosing because there is no longer, as in the 1980's a kind of centrifuge of the arts in Central Dublin. We do not meet enough. A large diaspora of writers, poets, painters and musicians into the mist has occurred and as a result, for instance, the variety of material that I received for the original print editions of The Handstand as a community paper at that time, (sold around the pubs), will not get reproduction now unless I learn to get up from this computer or quit my easle or typewriter and travel round to find the artistic individuals that do remain in hidden, small, sparse rented rooms(the rents are colossal now), as I myself, in central Dublin.

Prepare to see the fantastic drawings of a tattoo artist working here in Rathmines in a future issue, if I can persuade him to scan them.

Glad to meet another old friend, Pat Boran, but I found his programme a shade lacking in the bold poet stakes. Shake your listeners up Pat!Read some of your own work!

ART PROCESS - SET UP FIVE YEARS AGO BY THE IRISH ARTIST JOHN-PAUL DELANEY

Open Invitation for Contemporary Visual Artists.
http://www.artprocess.com
PRESS RELEASE

Art Process
Trapani 2007

www.artprocess.com

Art Process is an online art project that involves hundreds of artists from many countries. Set up in 2004, Art Process permits artists to create their own virtual gallery to publicise their works and
ideas, but above all strives to create a dialogue between those artists in the dynamic exchange ofopinion on the site. In a few years the site has become a reference point for artists on the internet.
Collaboration with artist Antonio Sammartano gave way to the realization of an international meeting at Trapani, Sicily in July 2007 of Art Process on the website, and about 100 reponded positively expressing an interest in attending. The project aroused the interest of the city council of Trapani, and the Curia Vescovile of Trapani (which in recent years has demonstrated a notable sensitivity in promoting contemporary art). The diocese has made available two unused and deconsecrated churches in the centre of Trapani as exhibition locations, while the city council has given the use of additional spaces also in the historic centre. The international artistic presence, along with local artists, and the people of Trapani will combine to create a dynamic cultural event of visual art and language - a meeting place for art, and artists, in the public domain. The diverse approach of each artist allows this project to exceed the confines of the usual "fossilized" art exhibition, and become a creative studio of painting, installation, sculpture, photography, and video that reflect a changing society, the confrontation of nature and urban life, and explore links with tradition. The idea to de-contextualize the artspace into multiple spaces in the city allows greater access for the public to the artworks. Visitors to the show will be sure to admire the city, it’s
location, and in time may come to consider Trapani as a new venue on the international artworld
circuit.

ENDING CAMPUS ANTI-SEMITISM, PUBLIC EDUCATION WEB SITE TO BE LAUNCHED

BY U.S. COMMISSION ON CIVIL RIGHTS

WASHINGTON, DC - On Friday, April 13, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights will launch a Web site that contributes to ending campus anti-Semitism by educating college students and others about anti-Semitism, urging victims and witnesses of anti-Semitism to report such incidents, and listing sources of assistance for students. This Web site is part of a campaign that the Commission undertook following the occurrence of anti-Semitic incidents on many of the nation's university and college campuses and receiving testimony from a panel of experts that too many college students are unaware of their rights and protections against anti-Semitic behavior. Campaign materials include the Commission's recent report Campus Anti-Semitism http://www.usccr.gov/pubs/081506campusantibrief07.pdf), and posters, postcards, and e-messages that will direct students to the Web site.

When: Friday, April 13, 2007, 9:30 a.m. Where: U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, 624 Ninth Street NW, Room 540 Washington, D.C.

FOR THE ATTENTION OF ALL TIDY TOWN COMMUNITIES - THIS REPORT FROM NEW YORK DESERVES WORLD WIDE ATTENTION

TERRIFIC ANTI-PESTICIDES VICTORY:
NYC SETTLES 7-YEAR OLD LAWSUIT WITH NO SPRAY COALITION, ET. AL.

City admits that pesticides may remain in the
environment beyond their intended purpose and may cause adverse health effects

------------------------------------------------------------------------

For seven years, the No Spray Coalition and other environmental groups have battled the City of New York in Federal Court in opposition to the Giuliani administration's massive and indiscriminate spraying of toxic pesticides, including Malathion.

On April 12, a federal judge signed a settlement agreement in which New York City admits that the pesticides sprayed may indeed be dangerous to human health as well as to the natural environment.

The settlement agreement states that, contrary to the City's prior statements, pesticides
- may remain in the environment beyond their intended purpose - cause adverse health effects - kill mosquitoes' natural predators - increase mosquito resistance to the sprays, and - are not presently approved for direct application to waterways.

This settlement agreement is a tremendous victory for health advocates and a rebuff to the anti-environmental polices of former Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Thousands of New Yorkers were made seriously sick by the spraying. A number of members of the No Spray Coalition, including several of the plaintiffs, died from pesticide-related illnesses. Many suffer from Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) or Asthma caused or exacerbated by the spraying. We are very glad that the new City administration has to some degree acknowledged that pesticides are extremely dangerous to human health. They need to be rejected as a way of killing mosquitoes.

In particular, the use of insect repellents containing DEET should never be used, especially on children.

The settlement agreement stipulates that the City meet with the Coalition for two 3-hour sessions. We will be discussing that and other concerns with the City when we meet.

One plaintiff in the lawsuit, artist Robert Lederman, notes that in 1999 and 2000 then-Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and other City officials claimed that the spraying was "safe" and was used as "a last resort" in its effort to kill mosquitoes said to be vectors for West Nile encephalitis.

"This agreement represents the latest rebuff to the notion that Giuliani was a good Mayor," Lederman said. "In 1999 and 2000, while repeatedly spraying the population of NY with pesticides derived from Nazi-era nerve gasses, Giuliani appeared in daily press conferences claiming that the chemicals were completely harmless. The City of NY has now admitted that these chemicals are harmful, that they persist in the environment and that much more caution will have to be used if they decide to ever spray them again."

Attorneys for the No Spray Coalition -- Joel Kupferman, (NY Environmental Law and Justice Project, and National Lawyers Guild), and Karl Coplan and Daniel Estrin (PACE Environmental Litigation Clinic), announced that as part of the settlement the City agreed to pay $80,000 to five grassroots environmental and wildlife rehabilitation groups and meet with the plaintiffs in several sessions to review an extensive list of concerns that the Coalition provided. The Plaintiffs are not permitted, under the terms of the Clean Water Act, to receive a monetary settlement themselves.

The resolution of the lawsuit begins a new phase in our activities. In our letter of concerns to the City, which is officially attached to the lawsuit settlement and available for reading on our website, the No Spray Coalition seeks to win official approval for a proposed "Community Health and Environment Council."

Should the City approve this new Council, it would
- make recommendations on environmental health impacts of pesticide use and alternatives
- review and propose alternative, nontoxic control of mosquitoes.
- critique the city's official mosquito control plan
- offer new plans to replace adulticides with safe materials
- assess agents chosen with regard to interaction with all toxins in our living environment.

There is currently no testing of chemical or biological agents in combination, and these
chemicals often have synergistic or cumulative impacts on health and the environment that fall below the officially designated danger zone when examined separately.

While we hope that the City would approve the proposal to establish the Community Health and Environmental Council, we recognize that it will probably take another prolonged struggle to achieve that, the next step in our fight to make the City accountable environmentally and health-wise to the people subjected to these toxins.

We expect that the terms of the Settlement Agreement will be especially helpful to those fighting against pesticide spraying elsewhere. Indeed, we consulted with many organizations not only in the U.S. but in Canada and Mexico as well, and we negotiated clauses in the Agreement with the needs of other locales in mind.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit were:

No Spray Coalition
National Coalition Against the Misuse of Pesticides
Disabled in Action
Save Organic Standards - New York (by its president, Howard Brandstein)
Valerie Sheppard (Rest In Peace, Valerie!)
Mitchel Cohen
Robert Lederman
Eva Yaa Asantewaa.
