THE HANDSTAND

JANUARY2007

Knowing what you don't know is a type of abstract thought process called metacognition. A pigeon doesn't know what it doesn't know, but, if you do that means you are intelligent and have a basic requirement for consciousness.

The Handstand January issue .............This magazine has now been on-line for five years, has produced 57 issues, and has published many remarkable texts, cartoons and photographs. I would like to thank all those writers and artists whose work excelled and provided a vital and often succinct dimension, who opened doors into so many mental options for us , methods of persuasion measured beside material of commonsense, fact and discussion that could not be ignored. Also to remember the cartoons of Maryalise from Canada and from Hassan Ismail from Syria whose work complimented the times we live in with shrewd assesment, a sly bite or pinch of conscience, beautiful and witty drawings that make these editions a pleasure to look back on.

The Handstand was preceded by a Dublin Community Paper of the same name, another called Treblin Times and yet another before that called UP Broadsheets. Thus for many years I endeavoured to give many people, here in Dublin, a voice - and for the last five years have taken untold pleasure receiving hundreds of valuable documents for the international Handstand that this website represents. Thank you, surely, my generous writers, and thank you equally my readers who have built up this magazine to real strength and hopefully a strong glimmer of light in this troubled world. May the New Year for all of you carry forward our actions for amelioration of both environmental and political dangers that our votes and apathy has sadly created. Many thanks too, to those who have sent me good wishes in my present difficulties.

The sentimentalist is he who would enjoy without incurring the immense debt for a thing done ; Scylla and Charybdis, Ulysses by James Joyce.
