Press Release

A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE

A talk by Cathy Fitzgerald

Friday 2nd February 2007

On Friday 2nd February in Waterford Regional Hospital, Artist & Scientist Catherine Fitzgerald will present a lunchtime talk entitled A Different Language.

This is the first in the Waterford Healing Arts Trust’s 2007 Spring series of monthly lunchtime talks which aims to offer a window on the diverse practices that come under the umbrella of ‘Arts and Health’.

Catherine is from New Zealand, where she worked in an agricultural research institute for 8 years before coming to Ireland. Between 1996 and 2002 she gained a BA, then an MA in Fine Art from the National College of Art & Design. Following this she worked on several Art and Science commissions and residencies, resulting in various exhibitions.

Previous work included an artist’s residency in the Science Department of Trinity College Dublin, which led to her creating a collaborative work between herself and the Science staff and students which was later displayed in the British Association Festival of Science 2005, held at Trinity College.

Catherine uses a range of traditional art, new media and interactive skills to enable a wide audience to reflect on ideas and developments in contemporary biological science. Her visual practice is to engage people in recent ideas and developments in biology, particularly genetics (for further info visit http://www.seeartscience.com). In this talk Catherine will outline her journey from the world of science into her current art practice.

The talk will take place in the ‘Back Classroom’ of the Education Centre of Waterford Regional Hospital on the 2nd February at 1.15pm. Admission is free and all are welcome. For further information, phone Mary Grehan on 051-842664 or e-mail WHAT@maila.hse.ie
