Hello Fibreculture

Please find following a description of an arts and ICT research opportunity in Belgium - this program is open to artists of all nationalities.

Introduction

The IBBT is a ICT research institute, created and funded by the Flemish Government in order to perform demand-driven, multi-disciplinary research in cooperation with a wide range of companies and organizations (see www.ibbt.be for more information). Presently, over 120 partners are involved in this research, ranging from hospitals to newspapers, telcos, broadcasters, government and of course a large number of technology companies.

In view of the increasing importance of the creative aspects of technology innovation, and our belief that the development of a real and lasting competitive advantage lies in the integration of research, organization and creativity, the IBBT has created the Art&D program. This program means to connect people and knowledge, artists and researchers, and should result in a mutually beneficial experience.

As a research institute, we also wish to encourage artist to use our research in their work, in the hope that this will lead to new ideas, new research, a valuable artistic result and a broader (outside the research community) understanding of each others research questions, methods and approaches. We realize, however, that adapting or creating research, and learning how to work with technology and exploring its possibilities for artistic projects is a time- and money consuming enterprise.

The Art&D program will provide a grant to a number of projects that are sufficiently innovating, have artistic potential and explicitly encourage interaction between artist and researcher. This grant can be used for research and to develop a prototype of an installation, performance, …. It is specifically meant to cover the efforts involved in researching/adapting/creating/… the technology needed.

What is the Art&D program?

A yearly program of project grants for artists (individuals or collective) for projects that include ICT research as a core element.

  • Grants amount: minimum 10k€ - maximum 75k€, providing for the artists fee, the equipment (in general to be purchased by IBBT) and the payment of the researchers work (commissioned and paid for by IBBT).
  • Duration of the project: maximum 1 year (can be less)
  • Results of the project (prototypes, partial installations, performances, … ) will be shown at a presentation event in Vooruit in Gent at the end of the first year of the program.
  • One project will have the opportunity for a 3 month residency at the SAT in Montréal
  • The program is open for collaboration with all other international artist(s)
  • The project should be partly executed in residency at the IBBT, both at the central offices and the research groups. The level of interaction during the residency with the IBBT and its researchers will be an important evaluation criterion

Who can apply?
Artists from all nationalities can apply, but the research collaborations are limited to existing IBBT research groups. Applicants should be able to demonstrate an experience in developing artistic projects that is on par with the funds requested.

There are no further restrictions, but we would like to point out the demand for residency and interaction with the IBBT researchers, which means that the applicant should have sufficient time at his/her disposal, and will need to reside in Belgium during at least part of the project.

The artist(s) will remain the owner of their creation(s), but grant to IBBT a license to use and reproduce (for example: using video, photo, …) the creations for IBBT purposes of dissemination and valorisation of the technological research. In return the artist(s) get a non transferable and personalized right to use the technology created by IBBT in the execution of the project and subsequent artistic creations for and agreed period of time.
