| STOPPRESS STOPPRESS STOPPRESS REGULARLY UPDATED ![]() August 27th: BEIRUT (AFP) - Israeli troops still occupy nine positions in southern Lebanon two weeks after a ceasefire between Israel and the Shiite militia Hezbollah ended more than a month of heavy fighting. Israeli troops also continue carrying out nightly incursions in border villages, "taking advantage of respect for the ceasefire from the Lebanese side," the Lebanese military official, who did not want to be named, told AFP Sunday. Under a UN-brokered ceasefire that put an end to the fighting August 14, Lebanese troops have continued pushing into the country's south for the first time in decades, but have so far not deployed directly along the border with Israel.
Clearing unexploded Israeli cluster bombs from southern Lebanon could take 12 months, the head of the UN weapons clearance team there has told the BBC. "Bomblets" have been already been found at 30 locations, but Mr Clark said he expected a final total of over 100. Israel says all munitions it uses in conflict comply with international law. USACenter for war-related brain injuries faces budget cut By Gregg Zoroya, USA TODAY Congress appears ready to slash funding for the research and treatment of brain injuries caused by bomb blasts, an injury that military scientists describe as a signature wound of the Iraq war. House and Senate versions of the 2007 Defense appropriation bill contain $7 million for the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center half of what the center received last fiscal year. Proponents of increased funding say they are shocked to see cuts in the treatment of bomb blast injuries in the midst of a war. "I find it basically unpardonable that Congress is not going to provide funds to take care of our soldiers and sailors who put their lives on the line for their country," says Martin Foil, a member of the center's board of directors. "It blows my imagination."The Brain Injury Center, devoted to treating and understanding war-related brain injuries, has received more money each year of the war from $6.5 million in fiscal 2001 to $14 million last year. Spokespersons for the appropriations committees in both chambers say cuts were due to a tight budget this year. George Zitnay, co-founder of the center, testified before a Senate subcommittee in May that body armor saves troops caught in blasts but leaves many with brain damage. "Traumatic brain injury is the signature injury of the war on terrorism," he testified.

hours before war: report A UN-brokered ceasefire went into effect on Monday after one-month of war in Lebanon but Israels political and military leaders are facing criticism over the conduct of the offensive and calls for an inquiry.
The driver for the two journalists said masked gunmen ordered the men into another vehicle and they were driven away. There is no indication yet as to who may be responsible but Interior Ministry spokesman Khaled Abu Hilal told the Associated Press news agency that police across Gaza had set up roadblocks to find the missing men. Fox News said that negotiations were under way to secure the pair's release. Over the past two years, a number of foreigners have been kidnapped in Gaza. All have been freed unharmed. The kidnappings come one year after Israel abandoned its settlements on the Gaza Strip and withdrew the soldiers guarding them. Some of the settlers had to be forced to leave their homes, which according to international law had been built illegally. One year on, the bungalows and gardens of the former settlements are now heaps of ruins, says the BBC's Alan Johnston in Gaza. 15TH AUGUST 14TH AUGUST - JOURNALISTS KIDNAPPED US television network Fox News named two reporters kidnapped in Gaza as one of its staffers and a freelance cameraman. The network's spokeswoman Irena Briganti identified the two as reporter Steve Centanni from California and Olaf Wiig, whose nationality she did not specify. A website for the cameraman describes him as London-based. "I can just confirm that the two of them are kidnapped, Steve Centanni and Olaf Wiig. Steve Centanni is an on-air reporter and Olaf Wiig, he's a freelance cameraman. Steve is American, Olaf I don't know," Briganti said. Earlier reports identified Wiig as Irish. Centanni has been with the network since its inception in 1996, reporting on numerous global news stories and events, including in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, according to the network's website. He is currently based in Doha, Qatar, it said. The two were kidnapped Monday, witnesses said, after gunmen intercepted their car in Gaza City. The reporters' Palestinian driver and two other journalists were set free. No group has yet claimed responsibility for kidnapping the pair. 14th Aug.: A curious paragraph from the

"friend" of Israel's -- was apparently
surprised by the Israeli cabinet's decision.
Internationally, the chances of securing a resolution for
southern Lebanon in the near future seemed to disappear,
because the Israeli military spoke of a large-scale
offensive that could last up to 30 days. Israeli soldiers
were meant to comb the area up to the Litani rivier,
driving out any Hezbollah guerrillas. Peter Philipp

More than 100 MPs sign petition attacking PM Colin Brown / London Independent | August 5 2006 The extent of the Labour backbench unrest over Tony Blair's handling of the Middle East crisis is laid bare for the first time today in a petition calling for an immediate ceasefire. More than 110 Labour MPs, including Paul Clark, the parliamentary private secretary to John Prescott, the Deputy Prime Minister, have signed the petition. That would be enough to wipe out Mr Blair's Commons majority. Mr Blair will not face the immediate threat of a vote because the Commons has risen for the summer recess, but it shows that he has lost the support of almost a third of the Parliamentary Labour Party on the issue. The petition has been organised by Crisis Action, a campaign organisation. The signatories included Martin Salter, the MP for Reading West, a member of the Parliamentary committee, a group of senior MPs who meet the Prime Minister every week. Most Liberal Democrat MPs, including Sir Menzies Campbell, said they would sign the petition, along with 10 Tory MPs. Cabinet
ministers are ordered not to sign petitions to avoid
splits in the Government. "We contacted every
cabinet minister and none of them said they supported Mr
Blair's position, which is pretty surprising," said
Brendan Cox, director of Crisis Action. He said the
petition, available at www.ceasefiretoday.org, had been
signed by more than 35,000.
The war is still going on. Large numbers of people and casualties are being hospitalized as a result of the daily attacks on Gaza Strip by the Israeli Occupation Troops! Right now in Rafah, I have seen people and children who had been bleeding for 12 hours, laying on the ground, while ambulances are no longer able to evacuate their bodies. The attack is still ongoing in the last 15 hours and so far more than 12 people were killed and over 40 were injured. the attack is still going on up till now, and the numbers of victims is increasing minute by minute. People in Rafah are appealing to the world and all humans who have hearts and mind to stop Israeli from killing and targeting people inside their houses. Rafah has turned into a hell as a result of the incursion which seems to be a very heavy with a number of 70 tanks and bulldozers as well as the Israeli helicopters and F16s hovering allover the night and bombing all related to humans. No
water, no electricity in most of the areas in Rafah, as
most of the families have evacuated to the schools runs
by UNRWA in Rafah refugee camp, but so far and the number
of the victims is increasing and many of the people whom
injured and killed where very close to Abu Yousef Al
Najjar hospital, which is the only hospital and when it
comes not to be safe for a medical worker to get into the
area or a journalist to get into the spot, then here we
can say that this is the end of the most democratic
country in the world!
Zionist Extremism Elevated to a New Level: Israeli Occupation Supreme Court decides to allow Jewish extremist groups into Al-Aqsa Mosque Israeli Supreme Court decides to allow Jewish extremist groups into Al-Aqsa Mosque PNN, (Jerusalem) Palestine News Network Wednesday, 02 August 2006 Top Islamic leaders, including Chief Islamic Justice Shaikh Taysir Al Tamimi, are meeting in Jerusalem today to discuss yesterdays decision by the Israeli occupation government Supreme Court to allow members of Jewish extremist groups to enter the Al Aqsa Mosque (the third holiest Islamic shrine, after those of Makkah and Medina). Members of the extremist groups have planned to enter the Mosque this Thursday morning. Chief Justice Al Tamimi refused to attend the announcement of the Courts decision, which was unanimous, citing that it violates international law preventing Israeli authorities from intervening in the affairs of the Al Aqsa Mosque. The Islamic leaders emphasized that the Mosque has great religious significance to Muslims all over the world, and that the entry of members from fundamentalist Jewish organizations was sure to incite violence and riots. They stressed that the Israeli government will be held fully responsible for the outcome of such an event. Sources told PNN that the safety and security of Al-Aqsa Mosque will be one of the prominent issues discussed at the upcoming Islamic Summit in Malaysia. There, Muslim leaders will discuss the ability of Muslims, particularly Muslim Palestinians, to access the Mosque and the continued Israeli attempts to Judaize the city of Jerusalem. Aljazeera
Jordan protester gets a heart punch: After nearly three weeks of fighting, about 750 people - mainly civilians - have been killed by Israeli action, according to Lebanon's health minister. A total of 51 Israelis,
including at least 18 civilians, have also been killed in
attacks by Hezbollah. July30th 2006 - The New York-based Human Rights Watch said Sunday that responsibility for the Qana massacre rests squarely with the Israeli military. "Today's strike on Qana, killing at least 54 civilians, more than half of them children, suggests that the Israeli military is treating southern Lebanon as a free-fire zone," HRW Executive Director Kenneth Roth said in a statement. "The Israeli military seems to consider anyone left in the area a combatant who is fair game for attack." He said Israel has no excuse whatsoever to target innocent civilians. "Just because the Israeli military warned the civilians of Qana to leave does not give it carte blanche to blindly attack," Roth said in a press release. It still must make every possible effort to target only genuine combatants." Qana residents refuted the Israeli allegation that the village was used as a launch pad for Hizbullah's rockets, saying that no body has ever seen a Hizbullah launch pad or fighter in the area. Hizbullah, which has inflicted heavy losses on the invading Israeli troops, repeatedly gainsaid similar Israeli claims, insisting its fighters operate only from remote non-residential areas. Roth said such consistent failure to
distinguish combatants and civilians is a "war
crime." He further said the "appalling
loss" of civilian life in Qana underscores the need
for Annan to establish an international commission of
inquiry to investigate serious violations of
international humanitarian law. The international
watchdog said its researchers have been in Lebanon since
the onset of the current hostilities on July 12 and have
documented dozens of cases in which Israeli forces have
carried out indiscriminate attacks against civilians. |
