THIS ANNOUNCEMENT IS GOOD NEWS FOR ESB IRELAND AS A PROMINENT FRENCH POLITICIAN THREATENS TO BOYCOTT GATS, THE FATAL SELLOFF AGREEMENTS, THAT ARE HALF-WAY TO WRECKING THE CELTIC TIGER:

Sarkozy aims to block foreign takeovers

By Martin Arnold in Paris

Published: March 29 2007 18:00 | Last updated: March 29 2007 18:00

Nicolas Sarkozy has underlined his determination to block foreign takeovers of strategic French companies by fiercely condemning last year’s acquisition of Arcelor, Europe’s biggest steel group, by Lakshmi Mittal, the Indian billionaire, as a “waste”.

The presidential frontrunner voiced a sharp protectionist twist to his industrial policy at a campaign rally in Lille on Wednesday night. His comments are likely to shock many of his admirers in the US and UK, who see him as France’s best hope for reform.

IS THIS THE CAUSE OF SOME OF OUR TROUBLES?
Too much bacon 'bad for Baconlungs'

Eating large quantities of cured meats like bacon could damage lung function and increase the risk of lung disease.

A Columbia University team found people who ate cured meats at least 14 times a month were more likely to have COPD - chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, kills around 30,000 people in the UK each year.

The report, in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, said nitrites in meat may be to blame. Dr Rui Jiang, leading the research, said high levels of nitrites are used in cured meats such as bacon as preservatives, anti-bacterial agents and colour fixatives. He said reactive nitrogen species, molecules that can damage body tissues, might be the key.

He said: "Nitrites generate reactive nitrogen species that may cause damage to the lungs, producing structural changes resembling emphysema."

NUA
'An Fhantaisíocht in Ealaín na Éireann:
Íomhánna den Osnádúr agus den Diamhair'
Léiríonn an taispeántas seo ról na fantaisíochta i saothar ealaíontoirí Éireannacha ag deireadh an 19ú haois agus tús an 20ú haois. Agus iad ag díriú ar shaol inmheánach na samhlaíochta seachas ar spéis na ré sin sa réasúnachas, chruthaigh na healaíontóirí seo saothair spreagúla, inspéise a tharraing aird an lucht féachana nó a rinne míshuaimhneach iad. Thug an litríocht, an béaloideas agus a gcuid samhlaíochta féin téamaí dorcha neamhchoitianta ar fail  d'ealaíontoirí, téamaí a bhain leis an domhan si, leis an éarótachas meatach agus an leis an miotaseolaíocht. Ba scathán é a rogha íomhánna ar spéis dheir na haoise sa Siombalachas agus san osnadúr, agus ba léiriú é ar mhian na ré sin traidisiún Ceilteach amharcealaíne a chruthú. Beidh saothair le Richard Doyle, George Russell, Jack Yeats, Oliver Sheppard, Harry Clarke , Art O'Murnaghan agus daoine eile le feiceáil sa taispeántas. ( Ag oscailt 4 Aibreán, An Gailearaí Priontaí, saorchead isteach )
'YEATS AGUS Ó MAILLE'
Taispeántas speisialta chun chomórann an cairdeas ar leith idir beirt fhathach de chuid shaol intleachtúil na hÉireann san fhichiú haois, an péintéir Jack B Yeats agus an scríbhneoir, critíceoir agus iar-hshaighdiúir de chuid Chogadh na Saoirse, Ernie O'Malley. (Go dtí 30 Meitheamh, Gailearaí Yeats, saorchead isteach)

WHAT'S NEW?
'THE FANTASTIC IN IRISH ART: IMAGES OF THE SUPERNATURAL AND THE UNCANNY'

This exhibition looks at the role of the fantastic in the work of Irish artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Preferring the inner world of the imagination to the current emphasis on rationalism these artists created evocative and fascinating works of art intended to delight or unsettle their audience. Literature, folklore and their own imaginings provided artists with dark and unusual themes from the spirit world, decadent eroticism and mythology. Their choice of imagery reflected contemporary fin de siecle interest in Symbolism and the occult, as well as engaging in the creation of a Celtic tradition of visual art.
The exhibition will include work by Richard Doyle, George Russell, Jack Yeats, Oliver Sheppard, Harry Clarke and Art O'Murnaghan amongst others.( Opens 4 April, Print Gallery, admission free )

KILKENNY ARTS FESTIVAL LAUNCHES “FESTIVAL MAGIC” COMPETITION FOR CHILDREN

Kilkenny Arts Festival has just announced details of “Festival Magic”, a unique visual art competition for children.  The festival is inviting children aged between 10 and 12 years to draw a colour picture which illustrates the magic of a festival and their own favourite festival memories.  The winning entry will be used as the basis for a large mural and painted on an outdoor wall at a city centre location during this year’s Kilkenny Arts Festival in August.  The design will also appear in the festival programme and website.  In addition, the prize-winning artist will be part of the artistic team – along with 19 other competition entrants, to be selected at random – who will create the mural during the festival.

The winning entry will be selected by Emer McGowan, curator of the festival’s highly successful Children’s Programme, along with visual artists Genevieve Harden and Deirdre O’Reilly who will co-ordinate the Festival Magic project.  At the announcement of the competition details this week, Emer McGowan had some ideas for young, budding artists: “This is an opportunity for children to show how they see the Festival impacting on Kilkenny and on them, so it could be a parade of people in fantastical costumes, children taking part in arts events,  fireworks at night against a Kilkenny skyline, a circus tent and what happens in it, anything goes really.  The main thing is to let their imagination run wild and to use lots of colour”.

Geraldine Tierney, CEO of Kilkenny Arts Festival added “One of the reasons we are organising this competition is to involve local children more in the festival.  We are planning some really great events for children at this year’s festival, but this competition is something they can be involved in from the start.  We hope that lots of children will take part – Imagine, maybe your child will see their work re-created in larger-than-life format on the streets of Kilkenny!”

Competition Guidelines

Competition entries should be submitted to the Kilkenny Arts Festival Office, 9/10 Abbey Business Centre, Abbey Street, Kilkenny by 5pm on Friday 27th April.  Pictures should be in full colour and drawn in landscape format on A4 paper.  The young artists should include their name, address, school, name of parent/guardian and the adult’s contact telephone number.  The winner and artistic team members will be notified by the end of May.  Competition entrants should note that entries will not be returned.

Kilkenny Arts Festival 2007 runs from 10 – 19 August.  For further information, please see www.kilkennyarts.ie
